David Hopkins and Teri Jensen have been interested in solar power for a long time. In 2009 Teri's employer asked David to identify a solar panel manufacturer and installer for their sustainability initiative. “After this project, my wife and I decided to do our first SunPower installation on our home in 2010. In 2011, we followed with a second SunPower installation for our home and we purchased a Chevy Volt.”
David and Teri’s total system size is 6.35kW. They used cash and a variety of sources to pay for their systems, including renewable energy tax credits offered by the Federal government and the State of Utah, solar incentive rebates from their utility, and the SunPower Friends and Family program.
Both systems have worked very well. “They have been maintenance free and I have not had to do anything,” says David. “When the sun is out, they make power. I have been pleasantly surprised by the low level of light required to operate the system. The system starts making power early in the morning and keeps going late into the evening.”
“We are delighted with our panels,” says Teri. “They actually produce more power than projected. Last month I drove my Chevy Volt 99.9% electric. I charge from a level II station at my home, so the Volt is powered by my SunPower panels.”
“Even with the Volt, we made more power than we used for our home and my 35 to 40 mile commute. I actually had a 1 kWh credit on my power bill. I’ve only used 20 gallons of gasoline since December 12, 2011 and I have nearly 5,000 miles on the car. I like to say I’m driving and living on sunshine!”

“ It works a lot better than people think and it’s not as expensive as you think. I like to compare it to a kitchen remodel that pays for itself, and will keep saving money for a long time. ”– David Hopkins, Homeowner
